Progress, Not Perfection

We live in a world today that is catered around what we perceive as perfection. The life we want to live, the people we want to be around, the perfect career, the perfect routine, and the perfect relationship. That’s not to say that having these goals is inherently bad, because goals and having the feeling of purpose bring an incredible amount of reward. However, it’s when comparison kicks in that can really come back to bite you. This doesn’t have to apply to just comparing yourself to other people. This can be you comparing yourself to yourself, or your “old self” for that matter. Seasons change, life goes forward, and there’s no way to compare a past version of yourself to who you are today. As humans, we are constantly growing mentally, spiritually, and physically. As a perfectionist and someone who gives everything I have, and then some, to anything I am passionate about, what has changed my life is the constant reminder of progress, not perfection.

I think it’s important for everyone to grow tougher skin, be okay with not always thinking and saying kind words to yourself. Hold yourself accountable for the things that you want to change. It’s okay to not be happy with where your life currently stands, or the path you’ve decided to take, but everyone needs to have the realization that YOU are in control of YOUR life. If you see something you don’t like, even with yourself, then change it. Stop waiting around for it to happen on its own because I can promise you that it will not. But also get it through your head that to make a change, your not always going to be perfect.

We are a flawed species but we are all just doing the best we can. Remind yourself, that if you are taking steps forward, progress is being made which far outweighs perfection. There’s no fun in the process of growing, learning, and changing if you already have it all figured out. If mistakes are made along the way, take note, learn from them, and keep moving forward. Remember your reason for everything you do, don’t let your passion fade, and enjoy the never-ending lessons life gives you.
